Mason

1841 Census

The first Mason family is headed by widow Alice in 1841:

Name Age Occupation Birthplace
MASON Alice 35 Farmer Yks
MASON Jane 12 Yks
MASON John 8 Yks
SEVERS Ann 50 Independent

Alice was born Alice Warriner, daughter of Matthew Warriner and Eleanor Alderson. She was baptized in Redmire 21 January 1803, and on 17 June 1828 married Robert Mason, the son of Robert Mason and Jane Storey. Robert died 9 February 1837, and was buried at Redmire 11 February.

Robert and Alice's children are:

  1. Jane: batpized at Aysgarth 5 July 1829
  2. John: baptized at Redmire 20 February 1833

There are no Masons in the 1851 census of Redmire, as Alice remarried 6 May 1846 to James Metcalfe--she appears on that census with her new husband.

1861 Census

By 1861, Robert and Alice's son John has returned, living with his mother, although erroneously listed as a boarder:

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
METCALF Alice Wife, Married 58 Miner's Wife Redmire
MASON John Boarder, Unmarried 28 Wheel Maker Redmire

1871 Census

By 1871, Alice's second husband has also died, and her son John is correctly identified as such:

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
METCALF Alice Head, Widow 69 Farmer Redmire
MASON John Son, Married 38 Wheel Maker Redmire

John was married to Ellen Warriner, daughter of William Warriner and Mary Raw, sometime since the last census.

1881 Census

John is alone in 1881, his mother having passed away in 1875.

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
MASON John Head, Married 48 Carpenter and Farmer 26 Acres Redmire

John's wife Ellen can be seen on the 1881 census living with her brother, William Warriner, at 319 West Derby Road, West Darby, LAN, with John and Ellen's daughter Mary, by this time 16 years old.

1891 Census

By 1891, John's daughter Mary (Nellie) is living with him:

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace

MASON Nellie Daughter, Unmarried 23 Liverpool, LAN

1901 Census

John died 28 February 1901, and is thus missing from the 1901 census, leaving his daughter Mary as the last Mason we see in Redmire:
