Horner

The Horner family had strong connections with Castle Bolton and Aysgarth, and many of the extended family can be found there over the years.

1841 Census

The 1841 Census has two households of Horners.

It first appeared that John was the son of Leonard and Christiana, baptism above. However, a monumental inscription states that John, son of Leonard and Christiana Horner died 26 March 1837, aged 24 years:

In memory of Leonard Horner, tanner late of Redmire who departed this life 2 May 1830 aged 63 years, leaving a wife and 10 children to lament his loss. Also Christiana his wife who died 2 January 1843 aged 76 years. [On reverse] In memory of Leonard son of Leonard and Christiana Horner who died at Manchester 29 September 1835 aged 30 years. Also John their son who died 26 March 1837 aged 24 years. Also William Horner who died 18 March 1877 aged 66 years. Also Ann Horner who died 21 August 1879 aged 80 years.

In nearby Castle Bolton there was another Horner family who had a son John baptized in the same year: John Horner baptized 20 September 1812 son of John and Elizabeth of Bolton. Note that in the 1851 census John gives Castle Bolton as his place of birth, although the 1861 census says he was born in Redmire.

John married Catherine Peacock, 14 November 1836 in Redmire. Their children are:

  1. John: baptized 8 January 1837 (Castle Bolton)
  2. Cathrine:
  3. Elizabeth: baptized 16 August 1840 (Redmire)

1871 Census

William was buried 22 March 1876, aged 66 years, and Ann was buried 25 August 1879, aged 80 years.

John was buried 14 February 1866, aged 55 years, and Catherine is now a widow. There is a memorial in Redmire to John and Catherine:

Erected in memory of John Horner of Redmire who died 11 February 1866 aged 55 years. Also Catherine wife of the above who died 8 September 1888 aged 72 years.

The above Margaret living with Catherine and Mary was baptized 16 July 1871, the illegitimate daughter of Mary. In the Leyburn bastardy sessions of 25 November 1870, adjourned to 30 dec 1870, Mary Horner of Redmire named Richard Thompson, shoemaker of Redmire, as the father.

There was a Catherine HORNER buried 11 Sep 1880, aged 72yrs, abode given as Preston under Scar, which is probably this person. Mary and her daughter Margaret appear in Preston under Scar in the 1881 census index. By then Mary is married to William WILLIS and the couple has two more children. Possibly Catherine was living with Mary in Preston before her death in 1880.

The final Horner family of 1871 is headed by John:

John (son of John Horner and Catherine Peacock, seen with his parents in the prior census) married Alice PEACOCK (the daughter of William Peacock and Jane Sunter and, probably unknown to him, thereby his third cousin) in November 1862. Their children shown here are:
  1. William: baptized 20 April 1870
  2. John: baptized 20 April 1870
  3. Jane Elizabeth: baptized 10 August 1868
Another child Ralph was baptized 3 November 1870 and buried 31 December 1870, infant.

1881 Census

John and Alice's family continues to grow in 1881, the only Horner family left in Redmire:

Luther was baptized 10 April 1887, the illegitimate son of Jane. John and Alice had another child Richard baptized 25 January 1888 and buried 30 January 1888, aged 8 days.

The Redmire parish register has a baptism for a Thomas HORNER, baptized 30 June 1895, son of John and Alice HORNER. Their abode is given as Newton le Willows. If Thomas was the child of the above couple, Alice would have been 52 at the time. It is possible that this is an adult baptism, though no mention of this is made in the register and Thomas does not appear with the family in any census record.

1901 Census

John was buried 26 October 1899, aged 63yrs, and the widowed Alice now heads the only Horner family in Redmire:

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
HORNER Alice Head, Widow 58 Blaes
HORNER Mark Son, Unmarried 27 Delivering Grocery Goods Worker Redmire
HORNER Luther Grandson, Unmarried 14 Redmire

Alice HORNER is listed in Spencer’s Almanac for Richmond 1912, living in Redmire.
