James King was baptized in 1783, son of Henry and Elizabeth King, nee Robinson, of West Witton. He married Dorothy (surname unknown) of Bishopton and baptized several children at West Witton where he was a tanner.

James left West Witton to farm at West Bolton, Carperby in 1846 and later retired to Redmire where he lived at Briar House. At West Bolton he would be a tenant of the Bolton Estate, but Briar Farm was then owned by the Elm House Estate.

The grand-daughter Isabella is a daughter of James' son, Thomas Robinson King and wife Anne.

1871 Census

James King had died in 1862 and was buried 3 May 1862 at West Witton, leaving his widow Dorothy:

The new King is Thomas Firbank King, son of James and Dorothy's son Thomas Robinson King, by Ann, baptized 20 September 1847 at West Witton.

By 1881, the occupier of Briar House was Henry James, son of James and Dorothy. Henry had been baptized at West Witton 25 January 1827. He had married Elizabeth Whaley, daughter of the Rev. John Whaley of Hawes.

Henry used to smoke, and because Mrs. King would not allow him to smoke in the house, he converted a room in one of the farm buildings over the cart house into a smoking room. This was complete with fireplace, cupboards, etc. Although now part of a dwelling, the layout of this room remained unchanged until 1989.

Henry had followed his father as tenant at West Bolton, and then again to Briar House in 1878. Whilst still at West Bolton, they had had 3 children buried at Redmire:

Elizabeth daughter of Henry and Elizabeth King of West Bolton died 14 March 1862 aged 11 months. Anne Isabell their daughter died 27 August 1862 aged 5 weeks. Henry Jas. their son died 22 May 1863 aged 4 years.

Henry was one of the first members of the Redmire Parish Council when it was established in 1896.

Elizabeth was to live only until June of the following year, and Henry until October of 1906. Both were buried at Redmire:
