John Cain was baptized 9 September 1821 in Alston, the son of John Cain and Nancy, nee Cowper. Nothing is known of his wife and children.

John's first wife, Mary, must have died since the last census, as he is by 1891 apparently married to Margaret, nee Heslop, the daughter of William and Mary Heslop of Leyburn. However, no record has been found of their marriage, or the death/burial of John's first wife.
