Shields
The first Shields appear in Redmire in the 1861 census--they
appear in Castle Bolton prior to this.
Thomas and John are brothers, sons of Joseph Shields, a tinner of
Castle Bolton, and his wife Mary. Their baptisms both appear in
the Castle Bolton parish register along with two more siblings.

error.

After the death of her husband John in 1868, Elizabeth married John
Willis. Note that she has only aged 4 years since the last census, and
her birthplace is also different. However, Cotescue Park is in Middleham,
and the presence of her children described as step-children to John Willis
confirms this is the same person.
Redmire parish register records the marriage in May 1870: John Willis
widower of Carperby, married Elizabeth Martha Shield, widow of Redmire.
By 1881, the family had moved back to John's village of Carperby, and
that is where Elizabeth died in 1883 (see the tombstone for her first
husband, above).

aged 67 years. Also Ann wife of the above who died 30 December 1895 aged
73 years. Also William Thomas son of the above who died 24 April 1870
aged 13 years
The parish register gives a different age for Ann, buried 2 January
1896 aged 75 years. Thomas was buried 30 November 1893, aged 67 years.
The parish register also records the burial of William Shields, 2 March 1901
aged 72 years, died at Leyburn workhouse. This is possibly the brother of
Thomas and John who was baptized 27 April 1828 in Castle Bolton.

Thomas Idris Shields was baptized 24 June 1900 in Redmire, son of Samuel
and Mary. A headstone in the Redmire churchyard relates to this family:
