Shields

1861 Census

The first Shields appear in Redmire in the 1861 census--they appear in Castle Bolton prior to this.

Thomas and John are brothers, sons of Joseph Shields, a tinner of Castle Bolton, and his wife Mary. Their baptisms both appear in the Castle Bolton parish register along with two more siblings.

There is no Margaret baptized, but there is a child Mary Ann baptized 25 September 1859 in Redmire. The use of the name Margaret may be an error.

After the death of her husband John in 1868, Elizabeth married John Willis. Note that she has only aged 4 years since the last census, and her birthplace is also different. However, Cotescue Park is in Middleham, and the presence of her children described as step-children to John Willis confirms this is the same person.

Redmire parish register records the marriage in May 1870: John Willis widower of Carperby, married Elizabeth Martha Shield, widow of Redmire. By 1881, the family had moved back to John's village of Carperby, and that is where Elizabeth died in 1883 (see the tombstone for her first husband, above).
