Ryder

The Ryder, or Rider, family have often switched between the two spellings of the name in the census returns and other records although some lines seem to prefer one spelling over the other. Here, we look at both spellings within the chapter.

1841 Census

There is only one Ryder family in the 1841 census, that of Joseph and Christiana:

Joseph married Christiana Rogers on 29 March 1820 in Redmire. They had 5 children baptized there:

  5. Joseph: baptized 21 June 1829

1851 Census

Another Ryder family appears in 1851, headed by Ralph and Elizabeth:

Ralph was the son of Ralph Rider and Elizabeth, baptized 17 Nov 1822 in Coverham. He married Elizabeth Stringer-Calvert, the daughter of John Stringer-Calvert and Mary Craddock. The census shows their eldest child, Mary, who was baptized at Redmire 9 February 1851.

Joseph Ryder Sr. had died in 1848 at the age of 68, and was buried in Redmire 10 November 1848. His widow has taken over the farm, and is also an inn keeper:

Henry married Hannah Shields in March 1867 at Redmire. Hannah (or Anne) was baptized 6 February 1833, the daughter of Joseph Shields and Mary Render. Henry and Hannah's children are:

After Christiana's death, Henry bought out his brother John from the farm and inn business for £30, and later (in November 1869) bought out his sister Mary and brother Joseph. He was paying rents for Banks, Lea Flats, High Side, Ward Garth, Kitlate, Redmire Allotment, Far Garth, and Caygill Close, all in all 52 acres 3r 35p.

1881 Census

Hannah is now landlady at the King's Arms, Henry having died in 1877 and buried at Redmire 12 September 1877.
