Richard is an error--this is Robert Mason, baptized 8 May 1763 son of Roger and Jane (nee Lodge). Robert married Jane Storey, 1 Jun 1790 in Castle Bolton. Jane was the daughter of Thomas and Ann, baptized 19 November 1767 in Castle Bolton. She died 8 June 1834 and was buried in Redmire 11 June.

Robert and Jane had the following children:

  1. Nancy: baptized 28 September 1790
  2. Jenny (Jane): baptized 14 February 1792; buried 19 October 1795
  3. John: baptized 26 February 1796; died 1 October 1824; Interred at Garstang, LAN
  4. Roger: baptized 20 May 1798 (seen above)
  5. Robert: baptized 28 February 1802; married to Alice Warriner 17 June 1828; died 9 February 1837; buried 11 February 1837
  6. Jenny (Jane): baptized 26 April 1807 (seen above)
  7. Henry: baptized 24 January 1813 (seen above)

1851 Census

Robert Mason died 2 August 1841, buried in Redmire 5 August, leaving his son Roger head of the only Mason household in 1851:

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
MASON Roger Head, Unmarried 52 Farmer 11 Acres, Carpenter Castle Bolton
MASON Jane Sister, Unmarried 43 Housekeeper Castle Bolton
MOORE John Servant 14 Farm Servant Reeth

Robert's memorial reads:

In memory of Robert Mason of Castle Bolton who died 2 August 1841 aged 78 years and of Jane his wife who died 8 June 1834 aged 68 years. Also John their son who died 1 October 1824 aged 28 years and was interred at Garstang Lancs. and Robert their son who died 9 February 1837 aged 37 years.

The above Roger doesn't appear on the 1861 census in the village, and died before the 1871 census. His memorial reads:

Erected in memory of Roger Mason late of Castle Bolton who died 9 June 1867 aged 69 years. Also of Jane sister of the above died 10 June 1880 aged 73 years.

Uncertain if young John is the culprit, but one John Mason of Castle Bolton, joiner, was named father of the illegitimate child of Eliza Saville of East Witton at the bastardy sessions in August 1852.

1861 Census

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
MASON Francis Head 33 Leadminer Worton
MASON Margaret Wife 35 Castle Bolton
MASON George Son 4 Castle Bolton

Francis was baptized Francis Heseltine Mason, 13 April 1828 at Aysgarth, son of George Mason and Catherine, nee Heseltine. Francis married Margaret Horn, banns read locally in October 1855, Margaret being the daughter of Ralph Horn and Margaret, nee Storey. Francis and Margaret's son George was baptized 21 September 1856.

MASON Catharine Lodger's Daughter 5 Castle Bolton
MASON Elizabeth Horn Lodger's Daughter 1 Castle Bolton
MASON Henry Brother, Unmarried 48 Landed Proprietor Castle Bolton
MASON Jane Sister, Unmarried 54 Proprietor of Houses Castle Bolton

George Mason is the brother to the Francis we saw earlier, baptized 4 January 1834 in Aysgarth, son of George (deceased by the time of the baptism) and Catherine. His birthplace above is a mistake--it should be Worton--it is correct in the 1871 return. He married Dorothy Horn, daughter of Thomas Horn and Betty, nee Peacock, on 23 May 1855 in Aysgarth.

George and Dorothy's two children here are:

  1. Catherine: baptized 3 February 1856
  2. Elizabeth Horn: baptized 11 June 1859

XXX - Henry and Jane are indeed brother and sister, but I can't fathom any relationship to George Mason...

1871 Census

First in 1871 is Henry and Jane:

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
MASON Henry Head, Unmarried 58 Farmer 25 Acres Castle Bolton
MASON Jane Sister, Unmarried 65 Castle Bolton
HORN Jane Niece, Unmarried 15 Redmire

Jane Horn is their great-niece, daughter of Christopher Horn and Jane Mason, a daughter of Henry and Jane's older brother Robert.

George and Dorothy have no new children:

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
MASON George Head, Married 37 Labourer Worton
MASON Dorothy Wife, Married 38 Castle Bolton
HORN William Wife's Son, Unmarried 18 Labourer Castle Bolton
MASON Cathrine Daughter 15 Scholar Keld Heads

MASON Sarah Wife, Married 30 Hawes
CHAPMAN Isabella Daughter 8 Scholar Hawes
MASON John Son 6 Scholar Castle Bolton
MASON Heseltine Son 4 Scholar Castle Bolton
MASON Elizabeth Mary Daughter 3 Scholar Castle Bolton
MASON Rebecca Daughter 1 Castle Bolton

Francis' first wife, Margaret nee Horn, was buried in Redmire 12 February 1863, perhaps due to complications after childbirth: Francis and Margaret had a daughter Margaret baptized 6 January 1863, and buried 23 May 1863.

Francis second married to Sarah Chapman, his wife seen above, after banns read in June 1863. Sarah is seen in Hawes in 1851 aged 10 with her grandfather John Chapman. There is a baptism 29 November 1842 at Hawes, illegitimate daughter of Isabella Chapman, that is likely Sarah.

Francis and Sarah's new children are:

  1. John Chapman: baptized 25 September 1864
  2. Heseltine: baptized 16 September 1866
  3. Elizabeth Mary: baptized 12 April 1868
  4. Rebecca: baptized 20 March 1870

1881 Census

The first Mason in 1881 is Henry:

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
MASON Henry Head, Unmarried 68 Farmer 25 Acres Castle Bolton
HORN Jane Servant, Unmarried 25 Domestic Servant Redmire
RUSSELL Jane Visitor, Unmarried 19 Bellerby

Henry's sister Jane, seen with him on prior census returns, died 10 June 1880 and was buried in Redmire 12 June. This is the last time we see Henry, as he died 6 September 1897, buried 9 September.

George and Dorothy are still in the village:

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
MASON George Head, Married 47 Farmer & Drainer Worton
MASON Dorothy Wife, Married 49 Castle Bolton
MASON Catharine Daughter, Unmarried 25 Dressmaker Preston

Their younger daughter, Elizabeth, married Octavius Moore of Redmire on 13 October 1878, and is still living in the village with her new husband and child.

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
MASON Francis Head, Married 56 Farmer & Labourer Worton
MASON Sarah Wife, Married 40 Hawes
MASON Elizth. Daughter 13 Scholar Castle Bolton
MASON Rebecca Daughter 11 Scholar Castle Bolton
MASON James Son 8 Scholar Castle Bolton

Francis and Sarah have had several children since the last census, only one of which appears above:
  1. James: baptized 22 September 1872 (presumably died before 1873)
  2. Martha: baptized 22 September 1872; buried 22 November 1872
  3. James: baptized 21 September 1873
  4. Simon: baptized 22 August 1876; buried 25 August 1876 (aged 2 days)

Francis and Sarah's older children were elsewhere on census night: John Chapman Mason was in Leyburn, in service with Robert Chapman (Solicitor); George and Heseltine Mason were in Askrigg, visiting their Uncle, John Mason.

Young Heseltine died shortly after the census, aged 14, and was buried in Redmire 18 April 1881.

1891 Census

George is now a widower, with three generations in the house:

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
MASON George Head, Widower 57 Farmer Worton
MASON Catherine Daughter, Unmarried 35 Preston
MASON Dorothy Granddaughter 1 Castle Bolton

George's wife Dorothy was buried 17 November 1890. The new Dorothy Mason was baptized 9 November 1889, the illegitimate daughter of Catherine. Catherine would have been very pregnant at this time, as she had a second illegitimate daughter baptized 26 April 1891.

Henry is seen in 1891 for the last time:

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
MASON Henry Head, Unmarried 78 Farmer Castle Bolton
HORN Jane Niece, Unmarried 35 Housekeeper Redmire
PEACOCK Henry Servant, Unmarried 17 Farm Servant Castle Bolton

Henry was buried in Redmire 9 September 1897:

In loving memory of Henry Mason of Castle Bolton who died 6 September 1897 aged 84 years. Also John Mason of Redmire and nephew of the above who died 28 February 1901 aged 64 years.

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
MASON Francis Head, Married 64 Farmer Worton
MASON Sarah Wife, Married 50 Hawes
MASON Rebecca Daughter, Unmarried 21 Castle Bolton
MASON Martha A. Granddaughter 3 Castle Bolton

The new addition above is Martha Ann Mason, illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth, baptized 20 November 1887. Martha's mother was in service at Thornton Watlass.

Francis and Sarah's son John Chapman Mason was buried in Redmire 17 May 1899, aged 34. The register states he died of consumption, and had been a solider in the line, perhaps at the Mahdist War in Sudan (1881-1899).

In 1891, John Chapman was with his half-brother George, living at Throston (nr. Hartlepool), both unemployed greengrocers. Perhaps the lack of employment encouraged John to join the army? George by this time is married, with three children: Heseltine, Francis and William.

1901 Census

The only Mason household in 1901 is the Temperance Hotel, headed by Francis' widow Sarah:

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
MASON Sarah Head, Widow 60 Farmer Hawes
MASON James Son 28 General Labourer Castle Bolton
MASON Martha A. Granddaughter 13 Domestic Castle Bolton
WILSON Sarah A. Granddaughter 1 Selby
