At the Leyburn bastardy sessions in August 1852, Dorothy named the father as Christopher Heslop of Castle Bolton.

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
HORN Jane Head, Unmarried 28 Farm Labourer Castle Bolton
HORN John Son 1 Castle Bolton

John above is probably an illegitimate child of Jane. Although too early for the above John, one Jane Horn of Castle Bolton appeared at the bastardy sessions in March 1857, naming Matthew Metcalfe of Askrigg, drainer, as father. Again, in September 1859, a Jane of Castle Bolton named William Peacock, labourer of Castle Bolton as father.

FIRBY William Servant, Unmarried 18 Farm Servant Hunton

Martha is an illegitimate daughter of Jane Horn (which Jane Horn is unclear). She was baptized 3 October 1858.

At the Leyburn bastardy sessions, March 1857, Jane named the father as Matthew Metcalfe of Askrigg, a drainer. There is also another for Jane, September 1859, naming William Peacock, labourer of Castle Bolton. Which one relates to Martha is unclear.

This Jane was born 15 July 1855, and baptized at the Methodist chapel the same day. Jane was the daughter of Christopher Horn and Jane, nee Mason, and was actually Henry's Great-niece, Jane Mason's parents being Robert Mason (Henry's older brother) and Alice, nee Warriner.

HORN William Wife's Son, Unmarried 18 Labourer Castle Bolton
MASON Cathrine Daughter 15 Scholar Keld Heads

HORN Alice Wife, Married 33 Castle Bolton
HORN Sarah Daughter 9 Scholar Castle Bolton

HORN Ralph Son 5 Scholar Castle Bolton

Ralph is a son of Ralph Horn and Margaret, nee Storey, last seen in the village census in 1851. His new wife is Alice Heslop, baptized 2 July 1837, the daughter of William Heslop and Rebecca Clarkson. As such, she's an aunt of the William Horn from the previous household, being the brother of the alleged father, Christopher Heslop.

Ralph and Alice had banns read in Bolton cum Redmire in October 1859, although it is unknown where they actually married. Their children to date are:

  1. Margaret: baptized 26 February 1860

Joseph Horn died since the last census, leaving his widow Mary:

Name Relationship Age Occupation Birthplace
HORN Mary Head, Widow 54 Labourer Castle Bolton
HORN Robert Son, Unmarried 23 Leadminer Castle Bolton
HORN Joseph Son 11 Scholar Castle Bolton

Joseph was buried in Redmire 8 February 1867, aged 53. There was an inquest into his death held on the previous day at the house of John Storey. According to the statements of his son Robert, and James Rider, Joseph was working at Bolton Park Mine in a craggy place and asked his son to get a two foot stemple and a candle. When Robert returned, Joseph had been crushed by a stone about 6 foot by 4 foot, probably from working too far without putting wood in.

Catharine Horn, having married Henry Craddock, has her sister and nephew living with them in 1871:

Ralph and Thomas are both illegitimate children of Tomasina. Ralph baptized 9 March 1862, and Thomas 24 September 1865. In May 1864, at the Leyburn bastardy sessions, Tomasina claimed John Dixon, a servant from Carperby, was the father (presumably of Thomas).
